Quote du Jour

The most fundamental, essential element, without which any community would fail, boils down to interpersonal skills. The glue that holds any group together is the ability to put aside your own personal ego at times, and to recognize that you have to look out for other people.
– Albert Bates

Financial Permaculture Chautaqua?

Tonight, Liora Adler, Andy Langford and Albert Bates gave a presentation on Transition Towns. Andy reviewed his estimates of what happens to the local economy each year in Lewis County as all the young people leave to go to college or work elsewhere. He estimated an annual loss to the economy of $8.5MM a year and then extrapolated what was happening to areas all around the world as the financial centers, corporations and large universities that feed them  ”harvest” the best and the brightest. He explained how this brain drain was part of the inspiration for Liora and he to start GAIA University.

Financial Permaculture Reaches Oceania!

Here’s a live wire coming through the global information grapevine –

Biochar

Pat Therrien and Albert BatesThe ethanol team at the Financial Permaculture conference is amazing. I was in their session last night led by Pat Therrien who manages to combine encylopedia-like knowledge with a sense of humor. She also has sympathy for people like me who don’t understand every third word as she explains the opportunity for farm communities in both ethanol and biodiesal.

We will be posting Pat’s handouts and materials this coming week.

Albert Bates is the permaculturalist assigned to the team. He started talking about biochar. He said it was really, really important to learn about it. And so that is what I am going to do. Albert suggested that we start with the wikipedia entry here.
