Spectacular Conjunction

At the end of the day, when the horizon is turning red and the zenith is cobalt-blue, step outside and look southwest. You’ll see Venus and Jupiter beaming side-by-side through the twilight. Glittering Venus is absolutely brilliant and Jupiter is nearly as bright as Venus. Together, they’re dynamite:

Cheney Indicted for Prison Profiteering

I decided to search out the reported indictment of Vice President Richard Cheney…

Texas DA Reveals Evidence Against Cheney
The Raw Story (27 November 2008)

Hearing Set for Monday to Oust Judge in Cheney Indictment
chron.com (25 November 2008)

This indictment underscores the importance of mapping out the incentives in our financial ecosystems and the risks of using federal deficit borrowing to underwrite laws, contracts and regulations that ensure that some people profit from the failure of other people. By doing so, we create an economy where people make money in the stock market from a failing economy. Until, of course, the whole thing inevitably comes crashing down.

The Big Lie

Here is a must-see video: 137 pages of foreclosure notices in the Detroit Free Press BEFORE the bailout and resulting layoffs from the big three auto makers:

In 1989, while I was serving as Assistant Secretary of Housing, my staff noted that there was one town in which 70% of all the mortgages in the town were in default and owned by FHA, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

Follow-Up to My G20 “Translation”

Following my recent interpretation of the G20 communique, the editor of Expresso wrote back: “Catherine, can you elaborate a little more about this printing euphoria?”

The Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernake, has been adamant. He will not let a deflation take hold. He is fighting significant drops in stock and real estate market values and a “stall” in economic activity by expanding the money supply.

Hence, the Fed has been aggressive in providing loans and liquidity to the market while the Treasury has been generous with bailouts. However, much of these funds are simply covering losses in the large mortgage and derivative portfolios — the capital injections do not appear to be rippling through the larger economy. In essence, large institutions are hoarding the resources and cutting off the smaller institutions in a way that is devastating for the real economy.

Happy Thanksgiving

A young man named John received a parrot as an early Christmas gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird’s mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to ‘clean up’ the bird’s vocabulary.

Coast to Coast “Curriculum”

I was interviewed on Coast to Coast Am Radio last night. As is sometimes the case, we were unable to publicize this interview — I was flying home when they called me.

I discussed several of my earlier blog posts on the show and thought it would be helpful to list them here. You may also want to provide comments. Members of the listening audience often do.

  • Statement From G-20 Summit: In English
  • The Military Holds the Dollar Up

  • Whenever possible, we will try to publicize upcoming radio interviews in advance.

    A GATA Gathering in Estonia

Before I left for Estonia, GATA Treasurer Chris Powell sent a message out on the GATA wire, Meet GATA Board Member Austin Fitts in Estonia, inviting members of the global GATA network to have lunch with me in Estonia.

Sure enough, two weeks later, a GATA clan gathered at the Bocca Restaurant in Old Town Tallinn on Monday.

From The Tavid Group, currency and gold dealers in Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Sweden, we had Chairman Kuno Rääk, Member of the Supervisory Board Meelis Anton, Development Manager Paavo Pauklin and Latvia Chairman Roman Lossman. The group at Tavid is quite remarkable. I had a chance to visit with them in their offices before lunch.

Joining us from Riga, Latvia was asset manager Felix Pieplow, his fiancé Nadja Cornelius and his partner Dimitri Speck from Munich.  See their websites at Staedel Hanseatic Qualitatives Asset Management and Seasonal Charts. Dimitri proceeded to teach me things about the gold supression scheme that I had not known before. Dimitri has published his research on the gold suppression scheme at Gold-Eagle.com.
