British philosopher and historian John Laughland joined me this Friday morning for a special conversation on events unfolding in Europe, the financial pressures on the Eurozone and the euro and what that means for the way ahead. John LaughlandIn 2010, John Laughland joined me on the Solari Report to discuss his article, “Why the Euro Will Fail.” John has been for years one of the most astute observers of the Eurozone experiment, publishing his original concerns in 2000 in his book The Tainted Source: the Undemocratic Origins of the European Idea. John serves as the Director of Studies at the Institute of Democracy and Cooperation in Paris. He is also the author of A History of Political Trials from Charles I to Saddam Hussein; Schelling versus Hegel: from German Idealism to Christian Metaphysics; Travesty: the Trial of Slobodan Milosevic and the Corruption of International Justice; and The Death of Politics: France under Mitterrand.

Topic: How Do I Find a Great Local Bank? – The Next Generation
View the Blog post

In 2004 and 2005, I published an article and audio seminar, “Where Would Jesus Bank?” We got so many requests that we published a checklist outlining the process of finding a new bank: My Bank: How Do I Find a Great Local Bank? Solari and I bank at the National Bank of Malvern in Malvern Pennsylvania, which is owned and managed by several generations of cousins. Current chairman Lydia Willits Bartholomew joined me for a Solari Report in 2009 for a discussion on how to find a local bank. With the explosion of movements proposing that we shift our bank deposits to Main Street, I continue to get requests for an updated presentation on how to find a local bank and shift your banking business. Finding a new bank can be a fun and fascinating process – if you know how to do it! And having bankers you trust and are proud to be associated with can make a real difference in your life – and in the life of your community. So it is well worth the investment of your time.

In March, Jon and I did a Special called “Let’s Go to the Movies.” We each chose five movies that are powerful in explaining the world around us. It was hit! So we are going to do it again but this time we will review our five (each) favorite documentaries. If you enjoy documentaries, make sure to check out the special list I did on food documentaries – “Catherine’s List of Top Food Documentaries & Movies.” We have also covered lots of excellent documentaries in the Let’s Go to the Movies segment. You can find a complete list of all the films reviewed through the end of 2011 in the appendix of the January 2012 Annual Wrap Up. Both lists are linked from your Subscriber Resource Page. Finally, we used to maintain a list of favorites on the blog which you can find here.

After we cover the precious metals markets and your questions on gold and silver and I describe why Warren Buffet is wrong about gold, Franklin and I will review the overall trends, including: Overview: the Top Trends - Reengineering Europe - American Renaissance: Fact or Fiction? - The Violence of Food Wars - Elections & (Gulp!) The Solari Report offers a rich archive of resources. After speaking with subscribers during our last few luncheons, I learned that many of you would welcome an introduction. This Thursday, I invite you on a tour of the rich library of materials available with ideas on how to access what is most valuable for you and yours. I will start with Money and Markets, including a report on my visit to Portugal, including the Tamera conference on water landscapes that brought together people from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. There was much discussion about rebuilding the land and the economy. I will review Stephanie Black’s documentary Life and Debt about the “beat down” on the Jamaican economy by the global financial interests as a prototype for the model being applied in the south of European today.

This Thursday, veteran journalist and author Jim Norman joins us to talk about the energy markets. What is happening in the oil and gas industry and what does it mean in terms of geopolitics and financial and commodities markets? A question I have asked for the last several shows is about the possibility of an “American Renaissance.” Is such a notion fact or fiction? Perhaps the most important question for the US economy is whether the growing oil and gas reserves will make America both self sufficient and competitive.

Chris Powell: Since central bank intervention in the currency, bond, equities, and commodity markets has exploded over the last few years, we don’t really know what the market price of anything is anymore. Thus the gold price suppression story is a story about the valuation of all capital and labor in the world — and whether those values will be set openly in free markets, the democratic way, or secretly by governments, the totalitarian way. This week Catherine and Franklin spoke with Chris Powell of GATA. They discussed the question: Why invest in a managed market?

This Thursday, I will be talking with Joe Mysak about trends in the municipal markets. Joe has made a career of helping his readers understand the municipal bond markets – from educating local officials about how to manage municipal bond issues to helping bond investors understand when something is amiss. I first met Joe when he wrote for The Bond Buyer, then read him regularly as a subscriber to Grant’s Observer. Since 1999, Joe has served as editor of Bloomberg Brief Municipal Market. Municipal finance is a powerful theme that weaves throughout our lives. Yet, these taxation, spending and investment flows are invisible to most people. Whether in cities, suburbs or in rural areas, there is a tremendous opportunity to learn and improve how municipal markets weave through the financial and living ecosystems around us.

This is going to be a gas, gas, gas! Jon Rappoport and I love conversing about “the real deal.” We finally realized we should start recording our conversations. After Jon joined me on the Solari Report in February, we decided our next conversation should be about the movies. Indeed, we decided to each pick our five favorite movies for explaining “the real deal” and to use these movies to weave a conversation about what is really going on in the world and how to use our imagination to create our own world. Then we decided we should simply invite the Solari Report subscribers to listen in. This is a special – so no Money & Markets and Ask Catherine. Just the two of us talking about our favorite movies.

Given the markets these days, we are mighty pressed to find time, particularly when the markets are open. I will start with Money & Markets. Then Franklin will update us on the gold and silver markets. It’s tax time, with corporate taxes due next week and personal taxes due on April 15th. We will also cover some of the key issues that relate to precious metals. Two of Solari Special Reports are relevant: Foreign Financial Filing Requirements – 2011 and Selected Tax Issues to Consider When Investors Move or Exchange Precious Metals Holdings.

This Thursday night, I want to talk about the big issues – faith, freedom, leadership, law and love.In the following weeks, I will lead two Solari Reports about rebuilding our economy. On March 8th, Franklin Sanders and I will discuss critical issues we have faced in these efforts. On March 15th, “The Comfort Calls Story,” an interview with entrepreneur Debbie Landers about how she started her company Comfort Calls and the legal and capital structure that Solari helped her design. On March 22, our discussion will scale up from the the capitalization of one company to address how we might support many entrepreneurs and businesses with community venture funds and other mechanisms to create financial liquidity in private networks and communities. There is, however, no point in more financial engineering if we don’t deal with the heart of the problem. Our economic and financial issues are symptoms of a much deeper problem. So, first, I want to talk about living in faith – gathering the power to be honest with each other and to rebuild the integrity and trust required.

His insight, his research, his meticulous writings created a force field that provided a powerful intellectual covering. Grossly oversimplified, we observed that the economy was optimizing around clusters of knowledge rather than financial returns. I felt compelled to learn more about how communities learn, share knowledge and change. If human and intellectual capital was increasingly creating financial wealth for companies, how could it create civic and financial wealth for families and communities? These questions were at the heart of my quest to help decentralize our economy in wealth building ways.

In the second quarter, numerous events underscored how the political economy is engineering the slow burn, including the maintenance of the dollar as the global reserve currency and the shift towards a new global currency system. Our wrap up will look at the events of the second quarter through the lens of the use of the financial system as a governance system - re-enengineering sovereign nations through a combination of credit and debt management, free trade agreements and IMF deals. Indeed the system has become so bold that the head of the IMF can be removed with a tabloid sex charge, only to have the accusations come apart as soon as the preferred replacement is approved by the IMF board.

This week on the Solari Report I will interview Bertram Verhaag of Denkmal Films, producer and director of Scientists Under Attack. To understand the financial markets, you need to understand the assets that are financed - both in enterprises and in places - and how the people who run them are managed, monitored and controlled. One of the most critical control points in our society is the ability to threaten, muzzle and cut off funding to researchers and scientists who have indeed "said something, done something. There is no one more heroic than a producer and director such as Verhaag who gives a platform and voice to those who would use science and our natural environment to enlighten and give life. Here is the transparency that is the basis of freedom, markets and civilization.

Jim Norman’s book The Oil Card: Global Economic Warfare in the 21st Century is one of the most important books you can read to understand the economy and financial markets today. In The Oil Card, Jim makes the case that a suppressed oil price was the most important strategic variable in bringing down the Soviet Union two decades ago and that engineering an inflated oil price is now being used to keep China in check. The war in Iraq was driven, Jim writes, first and foremost by the importance of keeping the oil price up and China out of a strategic position in the Middle East.

The correction that Franklin and I have discussed with you is underway as we approach the summer months which are traditionally the low period for precious metals prices. As I said last week, the slow burn has reasserted itself with a vengeance. My bet is that includes a covert QE3 to support the dollar. Franklin will also cover our eighth date in our series on the top ten dates in the American history of precious metals. An updated transcript of the first seven will be posted at your cart.

I am headed over to middle Tennessee to join Franklin Sanders for our Precious Metals Market Report this Thursday evening. The silver and gold markets continue to be strong - with silver and gold reaching new nominal highs this last week. Franklin and I want to discuss what is supporting the continued rise. Note that last week in the 1st Quarter Wrap-up, I increased the odds of a 2008 type meltdown for my economic scenarios for 2011. Developments in Japan and the Middle East combined with the continued fall of the dollar all signal continuing trouble. Franklin and I will cover the signs that have traditionally indicated that a price correction is likely to help you monitor market developments as we approach the Summer - the period during the year when precious metals prices tend to be the weakest.

As currency debasement eats through household savings, however, the squeeze is more challenging. Many of us are shifting networks and careers, not to mention the way we see things. That is why our Solari Report theme for 2011, “Slow Burn on the Prairie” celebrates our strengths to manage the path we are traveling. This week's Solari Report may arguably be one of the toughest topics we’ve ever covered. I will be talking with Dr. Gwen Scott about aerosol spraying (often called chemtrails), the impact on our health and actions we can take to protect ourselves. This includes a discussion of Morgellon’s disease and Clifford Carnicom’s latest research, republished this month on the blog (See 1,2). Global spraying programs are having a significant impact on our health. Carnicom’s testing indicates that the changes can be observed throughout our population. While unpleasant to contemplate, there are a number of very important steps we can each take to mitigate the impact on ourselves and those we love.
