Auntie Cuckoo’s Daughters – January/February 2025
They say you don’t remember much before the age of three. However, I am convinced that I have memories from before this. The very earliest memory is from when we lived in a place called Friends Colony (not Quaker), and I was lying in my crib with two girls looking down on me. They were Auntie Cuckoo’s daughters, and Auntie Cuckoo lived next door. My mother tells me now that they were about age seven and eight, although I thought they looked older, maybe in their early teens. How I had so much perception and knowledge, how I even knew that they were Auntie Cuckoo’s daughters, is beyond me. But I knew this. I would have been a little over a year old, as that was when we moved to Friends Colony.
One of the two had red hair parted in the middle, pulled back, and glasses. My mother does not remember what the girls looked like, but she confirms that Auntie Cuckoo had two girls. She can only tell me who Auntie Cuckoo was married to, and who her husband’s father was (a very rich man). At the time, such details meant nothing to me; what was important was that two other humans were looking down at me and I was looking up at them.
