  1. Great chat Carolyn & Jennifer! Super informative. I belong to a large HMO here in CA. I have had Dr appts in the last year where the attending nurse who takes vitals and guides you into an exam room divulges that tech in the form of automatic audio is being used and it’s optional so if I as the patient decline it, supposedly it won’t be used and your Dr. will proceed to be typing into their in house computer during the visit. I think your advice to watch what you say as a patient will be even more important with this type of technology in use. Currently, it’s use is being divulged to the patient, at least at my HMO but it will be interesting to see if that continues. In one sense, if recorded audio is not edited, it would prevent subjective interpretation by your doctor of what you say but what’s to determine it wont be edited! I don’t think HIPPA comes close to being any sort of protective mechanism here. Just a “heads up”re this spreading technology.
