“Is it healthy that a small group of companies have so much control over the government?”
~ Arno Wellens
By Catherine Austin Fitts
This week, Dutch writer and financial journalist Arno Wellens joins me to help situate the push for central bank digital currency (CBDC) in its historical context. Solari subscribers who have watched Solari’s pick for 2022 Documentary of the Year, State of Control, will already be familiar with Wellens, who has a deep knowledge of the European Union and a deep understanding of the threats posed by CBDCs and digital IDs.
With a degree in business administration, Wellens first worked as a banker and accountant before branching off into investigative financial journalism. His journalistic beat covers the EU, international real estate and investment fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering through the banking system, among other “financial quandaries.” His 2014 book, The Euro Evangelism, traced the history of the European monetary union, the banking crisis, and unsustainable debt levels.
In this interview, we discuss how Wellens came to understand CBDC risks and the dangers of central financial control, as well as what the EU and European Central Bank (ECB) are doing to roll out CBDCs, despite significant resistance from both the public and some leaders. Both of us agreed that our conversation barely scratched the surface—stay tuned for a “Part II” later this year.
Money & Markets
This is the last week of the month, so there is no Money & Markets. The next Money & Markets will publish on March 2. Post questions at the Money & Markets commentary here.

Wonderful interview! Can’t wait for part two.
Wow, Arno sees clearly where they’re going. I wonder if they’ll use CBDC to force us to pay into things like the Covid Fund he mentioned. Once established they could increase and create demands on our accounts to the point where our money is committed, automatically withdrawn, and what’s left for discretionary spending is meager – enough to eat bugs.
When Obamacare passed, blue collar, young, working middle class were particularly hurt. With both parents working, they were making just enough to have a home, car, kids. Being young, they didn’t have health insurance and they didn’t need it. They couldn’t afford Obamacare and it did not benefit them ($160 monthly premium/$6,000 deductible). Many paid the penalty tax instead of buying what they really needed, like a new refrigerator or washing machine.
Car insurance is another example of being forced to buy something. To license one’s car, you must agree to be financially responsible if you cause injury. Initially, we had the choice to put our assets at risk or buy insurance. Now, insurance is required by state law – choice was removed. (And people are less careful as a result).
We’re seeing a 25% jump in insurance premiums on commercial real estate “because of inflation.” This excuse could be used for anything the government might require us to buy with the CBDC system.
This was amazing and my favorite interview yet! He was very articulate and explained things very well. I look forward to his book. He is full of vitality and we thank you very much for hosting him Catherine!!!
This conversation of developing CBDC, between Catherine & Arlo, is one that is easy to follow with the examples and cycles of long and close history they present. 100% worth the time to listen!
