“I think the reason why we’re seeing this on the fast track is because industry understands that we are waking up at an extraordinary rate…. We’re pushing harder, and they’re moving faster, which means ultimately they’re going to get more sloppy.”
~ Reinette Senum
In Reinette Senum’s recent appearance on Financial Rebellion, Catherine introduced her as someone who can lead and inspire us to push back locally.
Senum has had considerable experience in local government in her hometown of Nevada City, California, having previously served both as mayor and as a member of the city council. She resigned from the city council in 2020, objecting to the “economic and psychological and emotional damage” caused by Covid mask mandates and lockdowns.
At the time, Senum referenced “bigger opportunities that will be far more impactful,” and in her current “Hill to Die On” series at Substack, she is certainly having that impact—raising public awareness and urging immediate pushback against the “corporate technocratic coup” that is being attempted upon all local government by the federal government through its congressional, FCC, and telecom proxies.
As Senum elaborated on Financial Rebellion, the House Communications & Technology Subcommittee agreed on November 18 to fast-track a resurrected 2023 telecom bill that would gut local permitting authority. The bill now moves to the Energy Committee, and if it gets the green light there, would then proceed to the Senate and White House.
In Senum’s experience, few local officials care about the placement of cell towers or about wireless harms—but “they should care about this” because it will “eviscerate all local authority as we know it,” setting a precedent that would allow any industry to “come in and do whatever they want.” She writes:
“Washington is about to hand the telecom industry a blank check to install antennas and towers wherever it wants…. It’s a coordinated power grab designed to bypass transparency and steamroll local control under the guise of federal ‘modernization….’ Federal preemption would override community rules, zoning boards, and even public input.”
Both Catherine and Senum are confident that we can win if we push back. Their suggestions:
We are grateful to Senum for sounding the alarm about the approaching digital concentration camp in such a clear-headed way, but also for her optimism that we can do something about it. Be sure to sign up for Senum’s Substack to stay abreast of actions and resources.
