Hero of the Week

Dr. Alexandra Muñoz and Elizabeth Murphy

“I really do think that we are looking at a potentially extinction-level event with all the [herbicide] exposures … and the declines that we’re already seeing in sperm counts and fertility worldwide.”

Dr. Alexandra Muñoz and Elizabeth Murphy

In 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed the infamous piece of legislation that altered the legal landscape in favor of vaccine manufacturers, successfully exempting them from liability for injuries caused by their products. Four decades later, Roundup manufacturer Bayer and other chemical companies have decided to take a leaf out of pharma’s playbook and are aggressively working to achieve a similar free pass for the pesticide industry. As attorney R. Brent Wisner observes, Bayer is willing to pay “millions of dollars to get these laws passed because it’s cheaper than it is to pay people they’ve given cancer to.”

With Georgia and North Dakota already conquered at the state level, the pesticide industry is now going for broke by attempting to wrangle a liability shield at the federal level, either through the FY26 Interior-Environment Appropriations Bill or, as is currently looking more likely, in the Farm Bill. In this David vs. Goliath battle, we are, therefore, grateful that two heroes have stepped up to push back on Capitol Hill: molecular toxicologist Dr. Alexandra Muñoz and Solari’s citizen-lobbyist Elizabeth Murphy (who also lobbies for the Weston A. Price Foundation).

With a deep understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which glyphosate-based herbicides cause cancer and reduce fertility, Muñoz has grave concerns about what will happen if a liability shield goes through. In an October appearance on Financial Rebellion, she soberly emphasized that the already serious damage being done to childhood development and adult fertility by these toxic products could progress to an “extinction-level event” if Bayer and the rest of the chemical cabal have their way. In another interview last July, she explained,

“This pesticide legislation is so concerning to me because we’re already in a very bad position…. And if you then give an entire industry the ability to not be sued for the harmful effects of their chemicals, you’re essentially giving them the ability to use the people … as lab rats.”

Murphy, for her part, acquired her lobbying expertise the old-fashioned way. Recognizing local threats to food, health, and financial freedom in states like West Virginia and Tennessee, she simply rolled up her sleeves and got to work. You can learn more about her insights as a citizen-lobbyist in the article she co-authored for Solari, “Working Successfully with State Leaders Who Will Take Responsibility” (part of our report titled Using the U.S. States’ Constitutional Powers to Preserve Sovereignty and Financial Freedom: How We Can Stop the Coup).

We congratulate Muñoz and Murphy for their dedication to the truth, for refusing to be intimidated by the lobbies committed to profiting from policies that result in the poisoning of our farmers and our people, and for continuing to demand corporate transparency and accountability.
