Money & Markets

Hegemon Cracking

In this Aug. 13 episode of Money & Markets, the hosts frame the week’s news as “hegemon cracking,” citing Trump’s openness to declaring a national emergency to impose voting changes, ongoing Iran tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, and Pentagon pressure to accelerate weapons production amid depleted munitions. They discuss how the U.S.–Iran war has shifted Asia’s oil and LNG sourcing, with the U.S. and Russia benefiting while key U.S. allies lose, and describe Japan considering Palantir/Anduril systems that deepen military integration with the U.S. They cover U.S. euro sales to support the yen, foreign Treasury holdings versus the Fed’s $4.5T, Greenland drilling tied to Trump-linked interests, Venezuela oil revenues held by the U.S. Treasury, a new Colombia president aligned with Trump, labor’s record-low share of GDP, EU use of interest from frozen Russian assets, EU cash-payment limits, a major cold-wallet Bitcoin theft mechanism, and pushback including a New Mexico Meta judgment and a lawsuit for unredacted Epstein files, while warning the bond market near 5% yields is the weak link.

    1. Thank you, JF. This is so comprehensive–I love it. I well remember all these programs, agendas, etc being put into place, and life had never been the same!

  1. It seems comments are closed on the Nathan Siles interview which was quite informative, by the way.

I was intrigued by a passing comment Nathan made about not drinking coffee as he wanted to “hold on to his water”. I have wanted to stop drinking coffee for quite a while now because I want to “hold on” to my electrolytes. I would be interested in his comments on the subject. I grew up in a French/German family that gave their children Café au lait at a very young age. It has been hard to cut the coffee addiction.

    1. I just wanted to say how incredibly GRATEFUL I am for Catherine and John and this Money Markets show ( my phone attempted to change this to Monkey Markets -ha!) Things are feeling so shaky and so uncertain… and like Catherine said, there is such a feeling of change in the air, that I appreciate tremendously having a reliable resource to come to. It has helped guide some important decision making related to my family. As a mother with a 2 year old daughter, this is priceless. So again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

      1. You are most welcome! Our goal is you can successfully navigate with a good map that is continuously learning, so we are happy when we hear this, and welcome suggestions on how to improve doing so.

      1. Maybe things never change because humanity is so entrenched in binaries. Maybe that is the reason westeners so fevently keep financing their prisons. Maybe if enough of us come clean and truelly believe in freedom we could thru prayer call onto others so good, and much more powerful, that they are terrifying even to the most virtuous and righteous and ask to come to our aid.

        1. Totally agree. Thank you Alexandra.

I think embracing freedom takes a measure of courage. Perhaps showing people freedom and responsibility is not to be feared but embraced will help. Also, creativity is fun!
