“Long live Downton Abbey!
—Amen to that.”~ Mary and Edith Crawley in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale
Reviewers of the latest Downton Abbey film—the third in the movie trilogy that has followed the hugely popular six-season television series—describe Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale as a “comfort watch through and through.” Nina Heyn, author of Solari’s Food for the Soul column, once described the Downton franchise as a “guilty pleasure”—“not very nutritious but so delicious.”
Set in the aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash, the “Noel Coward meets Downton Abbey” plot line offers the customary eye-candy fashion and décor while tackling some familiar themes: changing times, social scandal, financial uncertainty, loyalty, and the generational passing of the baton.
The movie is directed by veteran theater, television, and film director Simon Curtis, with a screenplay by Julian Fellowes, the writer-creator of the Emmy-winning TV series.
