Be Alert to Social Media Impersonation

“The risk of impersonation on social platforms is bound to get even greater as synthetic, AI-generated content (such as deep fakes) gives attackers a whole new range of tools to manipulate your perception and override your mental safeguards.”

Be Alert to Social Media Impersonation
Social media impersonation is a modern cybercrime—a form of digital identity theft—involving the creation of imposter accounts with the intention to deceive or defraud those who engage with the account, or discredit the person or organization being impersonated. (In these cases, imitation is most definitely not “the sincerest form of flattery.”)
Social media impersonation has been a recurrent problem for Solari and Catherine, including on platforms such as Facebook where neither one has any account at all. Of late, the most stubborn imposter problems have been at X (formerly Twitter). Although Solari has had success in getting some of the fake X accounts taken down, in one instance, both X and the imposter have been impervious to our complaints. For example:
- In response to complaints that the account was using Solari’s copyrighted materials, X removed the copyrighted content but left the profile intact.
- This fake account has blocked Solari’s real account (apparently in an attempt to stop us from warning people directly).
- The account even shelled out money for a “blue tick” verification badge to enhance its pretense of credibility.
- Finally, the imposter account has set up Telegram and email in Catherine’s name and is actively encouraging people to contact them—to what fraudulent end, we can only speculate.
According to cybersecurity experts, social media impersonation is a very serious issue, but they note that “a combination of factors…makes it easy for fraudsters to carry out their attacks and scams.” As we have found, reporting the impersonation to the platform does not necessarily lead to resolution of the problem.
We would like to remind you, therefore, that the accounts listed below are the only legitimate Solari social media accounts. Please do not engage with any other accounts alleging to represent Catherine or Solari.
