Food Series: Operating a Successful Farm Business
with Joel Salatin
“Land ownership is an economic defensive posture. Land management is an economic offensive posture. If you’re trying to acquire wealth, you don’t want to tie money up in land ownership. You want to get access to land and leverage it…. That’s why I encourage people don’t buy as much land as you think you can’t afford, buy as little land as you think you need to launch.”

This is an interesting quote, the approach to buying land has a lot to do with if you’re looking over a very long time period and what the production looks like. For me I bought what made sense for one generation, but if I had children who wanted to farm it might have been more and if there was two children a lot more. I look forward to hearing the interview!
I have been trying to find a family to connect with that is looking for a way to build their future in farming. I have two partnership opportunities regarding this in southeastern Wisconsin.
I plan on writing up a couple of classified and posting on Marbleseed.
Joel’s advice is super salient for all ag entrepreneurs, especially those starting from little or nothing. If anyone’s interested in “grazing” for profit, more broadly, Stockman’s Grassfarmer is good reading, but Greg Judy has tremendous video content on YouTube!
Great show. Thank you
