The overarching theme this week is the unstable nature of what is often termed “the empire”—a metaphor for the global financial and geopolitical heavyweight, largely driven by American fiscal influence.

John and Catherine discuss how the empire appears to be in flux, with everything from international tariffs to domestic interest rates contributing to the shaky ground.   1. I was in Restaurant Depot this week buying fish. They had a good price on wild caught filet of sole from the pristine waters of Alaska. Turn the box over and…”Product of China”. The same for wild caught cod filets caught in the pristine waters of the north Atlantic. We did manage to get some nice wild caught frozen hake filets, caught and processed in Chile, which is OK with us. Farmed shellfish is generally good because they don’t feed them, just maintain the strings or crates to minimize labor in harvest, as long as it comes from a country that is reasonably trustworthy and raised in reasonably clean waters. Chile, Canada and New Zealand are big in this area of aquaculture.

    If flying to Europe with a banana make sure that the curvature does not deviate from from EU standards or they might Reiner Fulmich/David Irving you.

  2. Why bother is right. When people are offered salaries and hourly rates that were starting salaries 30 years ago that came with benefits it doesn’t pay. Plus, they’re asking people to work on contracts for 7 months in a hybrid position in a city in which they don’t reside with no expense reimbursement. Are they supposed to have less than half the pay but double the expenses if they own homes? Not to mention inflation. The math just doesn’t add up. Employers have to ask themselves if they would operate a business at a loss. They wouldn’t. So neither can the Western worker. And it’s not just the US. This is orchestrated against what were 1st world nations, most of them Western. Who benefits? .
    Plus, no one talks about all of this is done to circumvent labor laws. ICE is going after illegal immigrants but no one is doing anything about the employers. That’s an issue everyone conveniently avoids. It’s a 2-tier economy. Been that way for at least 35 years.

  5. 1. Unfortunately I see states with ‘defunded’ police cities mandating cash as a bit of a setup. Businesses can not deposit cash after hours, and so become targets for robberies late at night. Knowing New York City, it might also be a tax fraud ‘gotcha’ where NYC tax officials ‘estimate’ the percentage income you make in cash and charge you tax for it, reported or not.

  7. Hi Catherine,

    I’m trying to get away from screen time and I’m considering getting a “dumb” phone for work to help me with this. I am 37 years old and I’m a real estate agent so I use my phone and computer all the time for work. After you mentioned the 109 days per year of screen time, I decided to look at how much screen time I have in my life (the iPhone tracks this metric). Turns out I have about 100 days of screen time based on my weekly average. Much of that “screen time” was music and podcasts that I listen to while driving or going to sleep at night. But regardless, I want to limit my phone use. I can easily eliminate social media screen time and reduce my texting/phone calls outside of work. But one of the main functions I use my smart phone for is to learn by listening to Solari and other podcasts. Any recommendations on how to reduce screen time, reduce EMF poisoning, but still having access to easily listen to Solari and other resources?

    2. I arrived at the same conclusion and used my “smart” phone for similar purposes – podcasts, Money & Markets and my favorite classical radio station while driving.

      I got my dumb phone about 6 months ago – went with the Light Phone https://www.thelightphone.com/

      It’s a bit clunky but functional for talk/text. Currently, I use it when I want/need to unplug from business – mainly on weekends. I also only gave the number to a very few limited family members.

      Trying to navigate one foot in and one foot out of the matrix

      1. James, I did the same. I use a Lightphone-II. NO blue light. Clunky but works and has a full keyboard for texting and offers a hotspot. I don’t leave the phone on. I turn it on 5-10 times a day to check messages, text. I am an auctioneer in middle Tennessee. The auction service uses a app called Slack for internal communications. Since you can not access email, or the internet with the Lightphone, I use an ipad I keep in my briefcase I access using the Lightphone hotspot. A few times a day I check email, Slack, then power off.

        The Lightphone navigation works good. It is not a nice colorful map, but it works. The directory on the Lightphone is good also. Nothing fancy, but if you are looking for the nearest coffee shop or gas station, it will find it for you and map your way.

        The lightphone is almost perfect. It broke the addiction to the iphone. The Lightphone runs much cooler (emf) than the iphone. The Lightphone does not hurt my hands when using it.
        The Lightphone broke the addiction, the sense of need everyone has for these dangerous (i think, military devices) I use the phone for utility only. No mindless browsing, no games, no meaningless notifications.

        Up until about 6 years ago, I lived with my iphone. I sat at a desk with a bluetooth earpiece, a bluetooth keyboard, a bluetooth mouse, imac with wifi, a wifi modem just 20 feet away… I had headaches all the times.

        When we wired the house for internet, turned off the cells phones, stopped using bluetooth, our headaches went away. Haven’t had one since, unless I spend a day in working in emf Nashville.

        The other thing I noticed is my body is easier to manage without these devices. I don’t have trouble managing my weight like before. Jack Kruse has been telling us these things are screwing up our bodies and making us sick and fat. I think he is right.

        The most dangerous thing we do in this world is carry a cell phone listening targeting device that makes us fat and sick. We will never climb out of this mess if everyone is carry a smartphone. Toss the smartphones and blind the bastards.

          I need to take my Lightphone use to the next level and get the map functionality – for coffee shops, restaurants and gas stations. I have a good old paper atlas I keep in my truck for “maps”.

      2. Sad to report my Lightphone-II failed this morning. Won’t power up. Turns out, there are many more e-ink minimal phones out, that were not out when I purchased the Lightphone.         My Lightphone was off 90% of the time. But I might turn the radio on and off 40 times a day, check message, text, then off again. Waking up the phone then navigating to airplane mode will be much easier with a manual on/off.

  11. John, per Col Macgregor and others kill ratio is 20 to 25 to one. Also, why Russia is going to speed up? The people of Russia are tired of the killing they are mad. Plus my take is the longer it drags on the more chance of the west planning more attacks. Look for Russia to declare Ukraine a terrorist state, then they go after the leadership. Now also with what we helped Israel do, and Trumps tweets on it and knowing of the attack on Iran…….nothing Trump says will be taken as truth or having any credibility. Sad the killing and war rolls on from a person who ran on I will stop the wars. Pray for peace.

    1. They are going to keep going until they have their buffer zone, otherwise they will have to fight to take it under more adverse conditions. So might as well finish the job now. One question is to what extent the creators of New Israel want them to finish cleaning out the Ukraine.

  15. For many years I subscribed to The Dines Report. Jim Dines was decades ahead of the US politicians on rare earths and outcomes by not maintaing refining capacity in the United States. Research would show that the US was the leader in processing rare earths years ago, but there was very little money in rare earths. The refining was allowed to be sent to China, since it was cheaper, and becasue of the pollutants created during the refing process. Today, that doesn’t look like a very good decision.

  22. On the subject of rare earth minerals market.

    China has cornered the market on processing capacity as John noted. Rare earth processing was a high priority on China’s industrial policy pathway years ago, received the normal extensive government support, much patient capital, etc. Which of course led to overbuilding capacity, predatory pricing export practices and more as is typical.

    The US already has ample rare earth resources in the ground. So raw material supply is not the issue and in my view is a bright red herring in Trump admin narratives. What is mined in the US has for years been sent to China for refining because the process, especially for heavy rare earths, is extremely nasty in environmental impact. Building a clean enough process to meet US environmental standards/to address NIMBYs is very costly and thus would be uncompetitive with the existing Chinese installed production base absent some form of sizable sustainable subsidy/financial guarantees.

    On that last point, given the total lack of any consistency in the government position on most all economic and defense matters thus far, who in their right mind would deploy private capital (regardless of cost of capital) on domestic rare earth processing plant in the US? The same was true in the last Trump admin and it remains even more emphatically so this time around.

      Once again, I see internet addicts chomping at the bit for some immediate response.

      But this is bigger than just Iran and Israel, or even the USA and Israel. At some point, there’s going to be a tipover where the global community no longer thinks of the general “West” as the good guys. At some point, the nations of the world are going to say the hell with the UN and the IAEA and the IMF and all the rest of the multilateral institutions, including all those insurance and metal and oil trading markets in London. And when that happens, byebye fiscal and political dominance.

      Forget about Iranian missiles for a minute and ask – when are China and Turkey going to stop selling goods to Israel? That happens and Israel vaporizes overnight purely from economic reasons. And how many phone calls are going on right now between Tehran and Moscow and Moscow and Beijing? A lot is my guess. Same across the Arab world. The blowback from this is going to be a lot bigger than the number of dead bodies.

I am here because CAF & team not only give opinions, but back those up with lots of realities from various sources, many scientific and dot connect thru many charts and clearly state when speculating. It is hard to find simple objective news with no opinionated inserts. Next to all that they bring many solutions to the table. It doesn’t even stop there, also many handles are offered to better ourselves.

        I agree with you, what is the purpose of the UN, IMF, IAEA ect. All current physical and economic wars could have been stopped easely. The old gods are back and playing same old biblical games. Same playbook under constant changing names so humanity can’t piece together the same historic scenario playing out paused via thousands of years. Logic, empathy and intuition and thus integrity is at an all time low, worldwide and not just our leaders!

  24. It’s no surprise that the “riots” took place where they did. Trump needed a legal foothold to send in protections, i.e. National Guard, etc and he got it when these actions occurred at a Federal building location in LA. Federal buildings are Federal jurisdiction. Verified this with a relative who has 25 years in law enforcement and 5 years following as a Federal Guard in a Northern California Federal building. In Oakland for example, there are two Federal locations near the court house and the Feds have jurisdiction in the outside space between the two buildings as well. I wish Newsome luck on his lawsuits against the Trump Admin as far as the Fed. call of the Guard and troops into CA but essentially Trump’s argument is that the Fed. Government is protecting a Federal building and Federal employees. So, I think Newsome might not get the result he’s hoping for from the CA State Courts. Some one on the Federal level did their legal homework. This might be why Newsome appears on the verge of tears these days. As you say often Catherine, “jurisdiction matters” and you are so right.

  26. I am in LA, and I was also living in Los Angeles for the Rodney King Riots. There was no real riot. I think they were trying to spark something like BLM protest or the Rodney King riots, but the Mexican community is very different from the black community here. None of it really made sense. It was somehow supposed to be about police brutality, except there wasn’t brutality. Having lived in the city during the real riots, these just seemed completely faked from the outset. Anyone who lives here also recognizes where the riots were held. It was part of downtown where no one lives, and frankly no one visits unless you have some business with an obscure city department. They did a good job burning up some of the annoying Waymo drones. No one cares, my liberal friends don’t care. It was really obvious that it wasn’t real.

    However, what I did see was my conservative friends bite that side of the propaganda hook line, and sinker, reposting videos of the Mexican flag being waved etc. That part seemed to work.

      I live in Los Angeles too. I agree, the Mexican Flag waving set off a couple of white conservative neighbors but the Mexican/American and Salvadorian/American conservatives knew immediately it was a con job.

      People I talked to in the grocery store out here in the San Fernando Valley were very happy to see those stupid WAYMO cars get burned down. Some of them wondered if it was a plan to remove Google companies and possible get other driverless car companies like Palantir in place? They also think Kristi Noem should get a better plastic surgeon and wear less makeup. It was a fun group in line at the Gelson’s Supermarket. ; )

      No one thinks the riots were real. Our close friend who owns a taco truck company who parks his rigs around DTLA said he could spot all the trouble makers, they were well equipped and had ear pieces in ready to take orders. They also noticed some out of place pink & purples colored sweatshirts the first few days.

      The only thing that bothered me was the 101 freeway shutdown at downtown, it happened to be right where I drive to care for a few people and where I usually change freeways to get to my elderly Uncle’s house.

      Other than bad traffic on the first few days if you wanted to go to certain parts of Los Angeles, it wasn’t a problem.

      I think it was a total flop.

      1. I was thinking about this more one they are never going to get the ICE raid protests off the ground. Most all the Latin Americans come from places where the government is far more brutal and corrupt. So why are they going to complain about corruption or government brutality in the Trump regime etc. I was working an engineer contract several years ago in LA and the foreman from El Salvador had a few days during the job where his son, who was still in El Salvador, had been kidnapped by a Cartel, and then luckily managed to get free. The money that foreman, who was here legally, was allowing his family to buy large plantations back in his home country. The idea that these people are going to protest is so completely oblivious to the actual socioeconomic realities. It has to be some young ivy leaguers in Washington coming up with this BS and who think it is going to work.

        It reminds me of the complete failure of the Pussy Riot scheme in Moscow years back where the state department thought they could stir up descent in Russia by the desecration of an Othrodox church.

        What they may find now is people really showing up on behalf of Palestine.

  30. Mike Benz, former State Department Cyber is doing a bang up job of exposing these corrupt NGO structures and the inversion of the rule of law.     Thank you for your ongoing clarity in this unmanageable world, I depend on both of your perspectives to analyze and understand the players, the events and the bottom line.

    As a follow-up to John’s comment about learning from the Amish with regards to home building, I was reminded of another group that has quietly gained projects all over the world. I’m referring to the Straw Bale building group that mentors and trains volunteers every summer as the volunteer teams build a home.     An observation. Seems Palantir may be running a PR campaign wherein “former employees” are putting out a narrative focused on Palantir’s “not having any of their client’s data” they “only provide software to clients to perform data analytic work on the client’s own in-house data”

    Have seen this campaign active on a couple of different alt media venues in the past week. Presumably communication from different “former employees”. Here is an example from Twitter, the first instance I noticed:

    The crux of the narrative in the above linked thread: “The headline “Trump Taps Palantir to Compile Data on Americans” is fundamentally wrong. Palantir doesn’t do that. They provide software that helps organizations analyze data those organizations already possess.”

    2. They are in partnership with Xai which collected all the data and the US government has plenty more. I think you are right, clever PR. In the process of analyzing the clients data you end up with the data. My company Hamilton Securities Group managed analytics for the HUD housing and mortgage data. The US DOJ brought fall allegations and seized our offices and backed up all of our data and tried to stop our access to our data although we had wiped it clean of government data. So they know the score.

      1. An open question is which databases are still physically isolated in decentralized USG departmental data centers and which databases were (pre-2025) moved to USG centralized cloud infrastructure operated by commercial providers.

    3. It would be great to find and interview one of Palantir’s clients to see what they are doing and what the Palantir software actually shows and does.

I want to note how totally impersonal this whole healthcare arrangement is. You never get a doctor that speaks to you or knows you. You just get moved around based on AI.         Alex Karp, the CEO, is a strange person to be in charge of the world’s biggest and most important tech company. An admitted dyslexic with a Stanford Law degree. I did not see anything on him being a dual citizen; however, he is a practicing Jew and flew his entire company board to Israel in 2024 to support the war in Gaza – why would this actually be needed?
