Music of the Week: April 22, 2022: Ain’t No Sunshine – Cover by Canen

Our music for this week is a stunning performance by then 12-year-old Canen covering Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine” with a group of extremely talented and sensitive musicians and a sublime cello player.
Canen (her stage name) is actually Joanna Strogatz; she is now 19 and studying music. As “Jo next door,” she is exploring her own compositions as a singer-songwriter.
Canen’s voice is incredibly sophisticated and mature; even as a young teen, she seemed to be able to transport a veteran wisdom and vibration that her singing teacher describes as coming from an “old soul.”

Chills!!!

This is lovely, thanks. Her name rang a bell. I think we’ve seen her in local children’s productions. Her father does math and crowd behavior and neuroscience here at Cornell. It’s harder to watch and listen to her sing masked with the Tufts Jackson Jills “I’m Coming Out.”
