Music of the Week: January 6, 2023: Pelé – Esperança
For Music of the Week, we have chosen this song of hope by Pelé, the king of football, who died last week at the age of 82. Pelé will also be our Hero of the Week.
Known for his fabulous Ginga style of dribbling and “dancing” with the ball, he also was a talented songwriter and a lover of music, and especially the guitar that accompanied him wherever he went.
Over the years, Pelé published several albums, solo or together with famous Brazilian musicians such as Gilberto Gil.
Pelé recorded Esperança for the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro. It offers a song of joy for the youth and a message of pride for the Brazilian people.
Tears came to my eyes at the end when they show Pele kissing Ali. What a surprise!!! How wonderful. And what a wonderful, uplifting song. Thank you….
