Prison Riots

A friend of mine who has worked in the prison system tells me that the prisoners say the way to tell when the economy is in real trouble is prison riots trigged by dissatisfaction with food. This is a microcosm of our society. When the time comes, will we realize we all need decent food, clothes, shelter, decent life, freedom and happiness or will the powers that be manipulate our prejudices and have us turn our anger on one another rather than use it productively to establish a more just situation? Unfortunately, much of the “right” in this country can still be swayed by catering to their lowest common denominator of racism, especially without knowledge of how the money works.
Take note on the way that Republican backed PR firms are organizing throngs of folks to go to the town meetings on healthcare and shut them down. In the end, the people behind these fake grassroots protests don’t really care about the folks who they have organized, they are backed by a corporate community that feels things are just fine the way they are. It is manipulating legitimate outrage, just as the Obama campaign exploited people’s hopes for change to people sick of the way things were going.
Food and shelter and the way the money works is the key to uniting people – in the end, we really all need the same thing.
