Dr. Darrell Y. Hamamoto is a Professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Davis. He is an expert on cultural analysis including media, popular cultural and sexuality. He is the author of these books:
- Servitors of Empire: Studies in the Dark Side of Asian America
- Nervous Laughter: Television Situation Comedy and Liberal Democratic Ideology
- Monitored Peril: Asian Americans and the Politics of TV Representation
- New American Destinies: A Reader in Contemporary Asian and Latino Immigration (editor)
- Countervisions: Asian American Film Criticism (editor)
Dr. Hamamoto joins me on the Solari Report this week to discuss the economic model operating at public and private universities, what it means for college and graduate education and how it relates to the larger financial models operating in America.
In Let’s Go to the Movies, I will review Spotlight this year’s Academy Award winner for best picture. This drama tells the story of The Boston Globe’s “Spotlight” team, the oldest continuously operating newspaper investigative journalist unit in the United States and its Pulitzer Prize winning investigation into child sex abuse in the Boston area by the Catholic Church. This is a topic that Dr. Hamamoto touches on in our interview.

Catherine,
No review of Spotlight will be complete in my view with
out a tip to Fr. Gordon MacRae commentary at“A Cold Shower for a Spotlight Oscar Hangover” under POSTS
Perhaps it rates a link or at least a related reading
linkage at Solari. I see they have done a complete design
makeover at the blog. The 60+ years he got from Judge Brennan is an example of
sex and courts being used in economic and culture war.
Also ties in to yours and Joseph Farrell commentaries as a
modern day example that compares to Nazi’s taking out local catholic leadership.I tend to believe Mr. Global’s minions got Fr. Gordon MacRae into jail and not you.
These Stone Walls blog is much more limited in topical scope then yours but the
street cred is equal or maybe even higher than solari.com.You might take the opportunity to clarify if you are anti-Catholic or
anti-Papacy or what. You comments are always pretty harsh
regarding money in Catholicism anyway.Regards

I’m a bit too naive to judge veracity with confidence, but this seems to be an interesting discussion between Professor Hamamoto and Leuren Moret of ancient ties into today’s power structures:
