Friedrich Kuhlau – Trio in G Major

The exceptional flutist Robert Stallman (1946-2019) is our choice for Music of the Week. Stallman was one of the outstanding classical flute players of our time, as well as a prolific music editor and teacher. He was winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American National Flute Association in 2023 (posthumously).

We hear him here with Jean-Pierre Rampal and John Steele Ritter on the piano playing Friedrich Kuhlau’s Trio in G Major live at Carnegie Hall.

Kuhlau is one of the lesser known classical (and early romantic) composers, albeit no less productive and artistic than his more famous peers and contemporaries. He admired and personally knew and befriended Beethoven, whose influence is noticeable to the musical connoisseur. No fewer than 200 published works and an uncounted number of unpublished compositions that got lost in a fire are the legacy of one of the central artists of Denmark’s Golden Age and Romantic Nationalism.

Almost a quarter of Kuhlau’s works are dedicated to the flute.
