Hansjörg Stützle is fighting to keep cash alive in Germany and Europe. Stützle is an entrepreneur, lecturer, and business consultant whose professional specialty is turning around the small and medium-sized enterprises that are the engine of thriving economies. He is also the author of the book “Das Bargeld Komplott” (The Cash Plot), which documents 15 years of his research and investigation into “the creeping—but by no means accidental—elimination of cash.”
This past May, after initiating a petition for the Europe-wide protection of cash, Stützle delivered 350,000 signatures—amounting to 18 stacked boxes—to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg. Pointing out that citizens are at risk of “losing the freedom to choose to pay with cash whenever [they] want,” Stützle’s petition shared the same cautions that Solari has been disseminating through its financial transaction freedom initiatives:
“When cash disappears, a crucial part of our freedom disappears as well. Because a completely different world emerges: every transaction can be monitored, controlled, restricted, and halted.”
According to officialdom, the coming digital euro will supplement, rather than supplant, cash as a form of legal tender, but Stützle questions this narrative, arguing that there is a real danger that businesses and public authorities will stop accepting cash (this is already the case in some municipalities). The petition therefore calls for cash to retain equal standing as legal tender next to the digital euro.
In July 2027, new EU laws (ostensibly to prevent money laundering) will ban cash payments of 10,000 or more euros if either the buyer or seller is acting as a business, and will require an ID for some cash transactions between 3,000 and 10,000 euros. In this increasingly cash-hostile environment, Stützle emphasizes the importance of closely monitoring what EU regulators are up to, and pushing back against stealth loopholes that could marginalize cash and lead to its abolition.
In an August 2026 interview on German state television, Stützle noted, “None of the public service offices accept cash anymore except the one at the train station. That is a state documenting that it wants to get rid of cash. If the state didn’t want to get rid of cash, then it would accept its own money.”
Stützle is a powerful and eloquent spokesperson for cash. We can only hope his fellow Europeans are listening.
