“Everybody admits that if the country and the Congress were made up of Thomas Massies, we wouldn’t be in the situation we’re in.”

~ Tom Woods

Movie of the Week

Can a presidential “war chest” buy an election? We hope not, because Americans need Representative Thomas Massie, Solari’s Hero of the Year 2024, to return to Congress this year. Massie has handily won reelection ever since he began representing Kentucky’s 4th congressional district in 2012, but this year’s race could be the race of his political career due to having earned the down-and-dirty ire of President Trump.

In Trump’s corner is a hand-picked and handsomely funded primary opponent (anti-Massie groups have spent $5.5 million thus far), as well as on-the-ground stumping by the president in Kentucky and the airing of a steady stream of petty trumpian insults on Truth Social. In Massie’s corner, however, are not just his numerous devoted constituents but countless citizens across the U.S. who have become fans of the Congressman’s consistently principled behavior.

Among those fans are Libertarian scholar and author Tom Woods, who last year decided to crowdfund a “highlight reel” to showcase Massie’s record and help him raise his own war chest. Woods also crowdsourced Massie admirers’ opinions on which of many video “gems” to feature.

Videographer Dan Smotz acknowledges that it proved impossible to capture Massie’s achievements in a two-minute short (which was the original goal), so the final video—titled Thomas Massie’s America First and funded “entirely by people who love Thomas Massie”—clocks in at an impactful 13 minutes. In that brief quarter of an hour, we see Massie’s command of a wide range of issues—ranging from agriculture to the Second Amendment to war powers to AIPAC’s capture of his colleagues to the Epstein Files—as well as qualities like courage, down-to-earthness, and, most delightfully, an often mischievous sense of humor.

Woods comments that Rep. Massie is also that all-too-rare entity in political circles—a gentleman. Though he takes abuse from “dirt bags” on all sides, Massie “never hits back in kind…. He sticks to the issues.”

In the video, Massie puts it this way:

It’s political theater, folks…. I refuse to be a thespian in this failure theater…. It’s good theater, we’ve got great writers—I just wish they’d come up with a new plot.”
