Most songs are crafted slowly in studios, but some pour out as music in a single, candid moment. “I Can Only Imagine” belongs to that category. Lead singer and songwriter Bart Millard, of the Christian band MercyMe, says he wrote the song in just a few minutes as the accumulation of a lifetime of emotions.
The song reflects Millard’s relationship with his father Arthur, a troubled man who was often abusive to his son. And yet, in later years, that same father found Christ in a true transformation of his soul which turned him, in Millard’s own words, from someone frightening into the person he most wanted to be like.
Arthur died of cancer when Millard was 19 years old, so he did not have the chance to get to know the man he had only recently learned to love. In 1999, while putting together material for a new album, Millard found himself thinking about where his father might be now—picturing him finally, fully free and standing in the presence of God. Those thoughts became the song, with words that seemed to have been waiting inside Millard’s heart for many years. In 2018, its story was even made into a movie, and it touched millions.
What will it actually feel like when we leave the body and stand before Christ and in the presence of the Divine? Will we dance? Will we sing? Will we be speechless? We can only imagine. Thankfully, many near-death-experiencers have witnessed this moment for us and they assure us: there is overwhelming love, forgiveness, and joy on the other side.
