The Red Clay Strays take their name from the red dirt clay of Alabama, with “strays” reflecting how the members found one another from different walks of life, drawn together by a shared sense of music. Formed in 2016, the band is anchored by the voice of lead singer Brandon Coleman who channels the spirits of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley while genuinely staying himself.
For years, the band sang in barrooms and backroad gigs before their 2022 debut album, Moment of Truth, put them firmly on the map. The album was crowdfunded by devoted fans and recorded live in the studio which gave it an unvarnished authenticity. In late 2023, the love song “Wondering Why” went viral on TikTok and the fan base knew why they had supported these guys for so long.

The song is essentially a prayer set to music, a raw and grateful declaration of worship that makes no apologies for wearing its Christianity openly. When Coleman bellows “I praise the Lord,” you believe him completely, and that conviction is infectious.
