Activist and truth-seeker Kyle Hence was instrumental in efforts to seek truth, justice, and closure for 9/11 victims, their families, and the American people. Hence passed away in December 2025 at age 61.
Hence’s 9/11-related pursuits included co-founding, in 2002, 9/11 Citizens Watch, which played a key role in calling for the formation of and then monitoring the 9/11 Commission and worked closely with the 9/11 Family Steering Committee (FSC). In 2003, Hence helped organize a 9/11 Truth event attended by over 2,000 people, at which figures like former Rep. Cynthia McKinney and former CIA officer Ray McGovern were present.
Hence also executive-produced, co-wrote and co-produced the 2006 documentary, 9/11: Press for Truth. Among other components, the film featured interviews with three members of the FSC—women widowed by 9/11 and nicknamed the “Jersey Girls”—who discuss the 9/11 Commission’s failure to answer important questions. In addition, six 9/11-related videos featuring Hence can still be found in the C-SPAN Video Library.
An obituary written by Kyle’s brother Maxson reveals that Hence “invested heavily with energy, passion, and time in anything he ever did, always putting purpose, mission, and human values and rights before personal financial gain.” In addition to his 9/11-related activities and his work as a freelance investigative journalist, Hence was a professional sailor who taught sailing to paraplegics and crossed both the Atlantic and Pacific as a yacht captain. He also was a strong advocate for local food, co-founding the Sustainable Aquidneck nonprofit to address food system challenges on Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island.
In 2009, Hence began the process of permanently moving to Costa Rica, where he met the woman (Hellen) who would become his wife and mother to their son Kainoah in 2019. In the aftermath of Hence’s death, Maxson organized a GoFundMe campaign to help mother and son move forward.
Maxson’s moving tribute to his brother concludes with a special message: “In the end, Kyle’s life taught me this—the only thing that lasts is love.”
