“Your success will be defined by your attitude towards the small stuff—the things most people overlook, ignore or don’t care about. The easiest way to do big things is by focusing on the small things.”
~ Steven Bartlett, The Diary of a CEO
At Solari in the News, we recently shared a fascinating conversation recorded in the Netherlands about “Local Resistance to Global Control” between Catherine, Elze van Hamelen, Utah State Treasurer Marlo Oaks, and Holland Gold’s Paul Buitink. Marlies Dekkers facilitated the dialogue at the Dutch De Nieuwe Wereld TV (“New World TV”) channel.
From her smooth, charming, and informed facilitation of the panel discussion, you might think that Dekkers had spent her career in the media, but in fact, she is first and foremost an entrepreneur and founder of the internationally successful Marlies Dekkers lingerie and swimwear brand, and only secondarily a podcaster.
Dekkers launched her first lingerie collection at age 28 when she was only two years out of art school and unemployment in the Netherlands was running high. Dekkers had an inspired vision that ran counter to the 1990s business logic that men were the primary purchasers of high-end lingerie—she wanted to design her lingerie for, and market it directly to, women. Creating pieces that would “frame women’s beauty and ignite their inner confidence,” was, as she stated in a 2025 interview, more important to her than “Is this going to be the biggest success in the world?”
Dekkers was invited to join De Nieuwe Wereld as an anchor in 2018 (at the time called Voor de ommekeer or “Toward the Turning Point”), after having met its founder, Dutch philosopher and writer Ad Verbrugge, in 2016. (Verbrugge renamed the channel De Nieuwe Wereld in 2020 at the start of the p(l)andemic.) Commenting on her role as an interviewer, Dekkers says, “You’re curious about the other person, and at some point, you just have to dare to let go. I think those are the best podcasts.”
Describing her ethos as a women’s fashion designer, Dekkers—whose tagline is “Dare to dream, dare to grow, dare to be”—has stated that she prefers not to waste time blaming men and would rather just “get down to business.” In that spirit, Dekkers also coaches other women entrepreneurs at SMARTgirls, a Dutch network that helps talented women do what Dekkers has done: “Sail their own course.”
