The song was written 10 years earlier by Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and lyricist Will Jennings as the theme for the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman, starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger. The film’s director wasn’t initially convinced of Warnes as the vocalist, as he felt that her voice was too soft to give it momentum. But Warnes herself pushed for the song to become a duet and suggested Joe Cocker as her partner.
