Women have not always been stuck at home just sewing and running households. Farmers have always been out in the fields and merchants have been trading in the markets regardless of their genre. Industrialization brought women into cities, sometimes to work in shops and factories but sometimes into more specialized new professions – actresses, ballerinas, nurses, teachers, typists and telephone operators, and scientists. The massive wars of the 20th century brought about a further change in traditional work roles – they have forced men to accept women as administrators, operators of heavy machinery, car mechanics or journalists. All the painters did was to record these moments of change in their art.

Thanks you. Grandmother, Mom’s side, had a print of Mother and two daughters working in the wheat field in the living room. Grandfather passed when my mom was 16. This new post brings back both personal joys of visiting grandmother and expands my appreciation for women and their work…and my wife! A joy.
