The Christmas Song

Andrea Bocelli & Natalie Cole

“The Christmas Song” with Natalie Cole and Andrea Bocelli has been on our blog before. An American Christmas classic first recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio in 1946, it has become the most performed Christmas song of all time. Natalie and Andrea sing it here in 2010—a forever song performed by two perfect artists.

  1. This was very lovely, thanks for posting. I never cared much for either artist/singer alone (not sure why), but this was lovely.

My picks this time around would be by the Puppini Sisters – a little-known group whose musical output, usually covers, is in the general style of The Andrews Sisters – 3-part harmonies and all. Here are a couple of Christmas tunes, followed by a few of my favorite non – Christmas tunes.

From their Christmas album, “Christmas with The Puppini Sisters”, there two tracks I would highlight:

First, “Mele Kalikimaka”, which is apparently “Hawaii’s way to say ‘Merry Christmas’ to you.” For years, I hilariously thought it was “the wise way”, but I digress. This version won’t shake the world as original or anything, but it should still bring many smiles:

Second, their version of “White Christmas” – and a rather unique one at that, unless I missed a similar version before it:

Now, for a few non-Christmas tracks (and some really big grins… I hope):

“I Will Survive”, a glorious cover, if not the definitive version (it is to me, see?) of Gaynor’s “timeless hit”. This one was the song that caught my attention, on the speakers at a Barnes and Noble many years ago, and is how I discovered The Puppini Sisters – I bought their debut record, “Bethcha Bottom Dollar”, on the spot:

“Sway”, a cover of an Eniglish version of Nelson Pinedo’s “Quién Será” another favorite of mine) – my favorite version of the English, from the aforementioned album:

From their second album, “The Rise and Fall of Ruby Woo”, which contains many fun listens, is their spectacularly beautiful version of Barry Manilow’s “Could it be Magic?”(which original was inspired by none other than Frédéric Chopin, as it turns out):

Finally, they do have a small handful of original tunes, and this one the charming and slow bluesy “I Can’t Believe I’m Not a Millionaire”:

I’ve always wanted to see them sing live, but it seems they’re not terribly popular here in the States. Anyway, they have plenty of other great songs to enjoy, among them their own versions of “Spooky”, “Walk Like an Egypyian”, “Sisters”, “Wuthering Heights”, and “Old Cape Cod” along with their fun originals – not to mention a new album, “The Birthday Party” and its first single, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

Merry Christmas, albeit a little early. B.
