Thibaut de Navarre
Atrium Musicae de Madrid
Our Music of the Week is a rare record album from 1979 published by Atrium Musicae de Madrid, a Spanish ensemble specializing in various kinds of medieval European music.
The pieces were composed by Thibaut de Navarre (1201-1253), one of France’s greatest music-poets. He was King of Navarre and Count of Champagne and was a great-grandson of the formidable Eleanor of Aquitaine, queen of France and queen of England, who personally reached Jerusalem in 1147 in the Second Crusade. Much later, in 1239, Thibaut was chosen to lead the Barons’ Crusade.
Also called Thibaut le Chansonnier, the troubadour is famous for his cultivated music in a variety of genres, from Minnesang (arising from the courtly love tradition) to religious hymns, pastorals, and songs of the Crusades. Categorized as “Early Music” from a time before the Renaissance period, the music is distinguished by its blend of African, Arab, and European styles and infused with sundry elements brought back from the crusader expeditions.
Dante mentioned Thibaut as one of “the most illustrious poets of his time,” which is reflected in the sixty-some songs and compositions that have been preserved for more than 800 years. The number of compositions and the number of manuscripts in which they were recorded testify to his popularity.

I very much enjoyed this selection of Medieval music. Reading the stories of it’s author/composer during his time in history bring some context to where we are today in shaping the world of European and Middle Eastern relationships. Wish those relationships were better.
Reminds me of Jeff Beck. Huh?!
Because the rock guitarist, Beck, was a perfectionist, who thought words got in the way of music.
For me, this music fosters quiet reflection. So does Beck.
