“There are cameras everywhere, and the only safe place in people’s homes is the bathroom.”
~ Description of Utopia
We learned about this 15-minute “short film about where we could be headed” from last year’s Hero of the Year and cash warrior Susan Luschas, who calls it a “horror movie.”
Satirically titled Utopia, the short is set in a social-credit-system-driven Australia (“Utopia: The Safe State”), where citizens routinely narc on their compatriots for the most minor offenses. The filmmaker suggests that the world depicted in this cautionary tale may be “only a few steps removed from our [current] phone-saturated society.”
Luschas considers Utopia a highly effective tool for educating people about the importance of using cash—bringing home the dystopian implications of a cashless, surveillance-state world in the way that only a movie can.
