How to Find a Lawyer

Ask Catherine Excerpt

In this 40-minute audio excerpt (above) from the Ask the Solari Team episode published on July 17, 2026, Catherine and Solari general counsel Carolyn Betts comprehensively address the question of how to find a lawyer.

Carolyn emphasizes at the outset that the search for a lawyer depends on the branch of law and the person’s specific legal issues. With that said, some of the tips for identifying a trustworthy lawyer include contacting local bar associations for referrals, using Internet searches to find lawyers with relevant experience and good ratings, checking peer-review ratings, asking other trusted professionals for referrals, and assessing candidates’ experience through court records. An Internet search for what lawyers in your city or state have written about the question or subject matter area of interest may provide a good indicator of the breadth and quality of their practice.

Carolyn also stresses the importance of clearly understanding a lawyer’s fee structure and the terms of the written engagement agreement.
