Few songs capture a sense of calm escape quite like “Sailing,” the soft-rock classic by Christopher Cross. Released in 1980, the song quickly became synonymous with tranquility, painting a vivid picture of drifting away from the worries and noise of everyday life—sailing the ocean of a peaceful mind.
Christopher Cross had a remarkable rise to fame with his self-titled debut album. In fact, he made history at the 1981 Grammy Awards by winning the “Big Four” categories—Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist—all in the same night. “Sailing” played a major role in that success, earning both Record and Song of the Year.
Cross himself wasn’t an avid sailor when he wrote the song, he says. While based on memories of sailing tours with his high-school friend Al Glasscock, the idea for the song came more from imagination and the universal appeal of escape and freedom. This might be part of why the song resonates so widely—it’s really about that ability to “let go” that we all need from time to time.
Sometimes the most beautiful journeys happen not on the water, but in the mind.
