“It’s guaranteed that the tools of death so ruthlessly used in Gaza will soon appear in other conflict zones.”
~ Antony Loewenstein, May 2024 preface to paperback edition of The Palestine Laboratory
In 2023, Antony Loewenstein published his book, The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation around the World. The book exposes how Israel’s “world-class” military-industrial complex (Israel is the ninth largest arms dealer in the world) prototypes its sophisticated weaponry and surveillance technology on Palestinians and then markets and exports its products as “field-proven” and “battle-tested.” In 2025, Al Jazeera English released The Palestine Laboratory as a two-part film that powerfully reinforces the book’s message.
Loewenstein is an Australian-German independent investigative journalist and author who lived in East Jerusalem from 2016 and 2020 and has also spent time in conflict zones such as South Sudan. Loewenstein is currently writing a new investigative book about Israel and Palestine due for release in 2027.
In Episode 1, director Dan Davies follows Loewenstein to Israel, where Gaza is experiencing the post-October 2023 ramping up of genocide. The journalist meets with both Palestinians and Israelis, while the film crew visually documents the wall-to-wall surveillance conditions under which Palestinians live. The Israelis brag that their “innovative” surveillance methods permit “frictionless occupation” where technology, rather than soldiers, upholds the “architecture of control.”
That architecture includes physical infrastructure such as walls that listen and checkpoints that scan movement data and biometrics; CCTV cameras monitored by AI; databases that track political profiles; communication surveillance through Israel’s control of the IT infrastructure; monitoring of social media; and invasive spyware like Pegasus. It also includes targeting systems like Lavender, which uses AI to compile drone-executed kill lists “rubber stamped” but not verified by humans. One of Loewenstein’s Israeli interlocutors comments that whereas it used to take a year to collect data on 200-300 “targets,” with AI they can now “do it in an hour.” Loewenstein also ironically notes that the highly touted “frictionless” technology actually contributes to “a lot more friction” in the lives of Palestinian journalists, human rights activists, and others labeled as troublemakers.
Early in the episode, Loewenstein makes an important point:
“What Israel is testing and selling and promoting is not just weaponry, it’s an idea. It’s a concept—and it’s a very appealing concept to many other countries. Israel sells the idea of getting away with it.”
Catherine and John Titus have often emphasized on Money & Markets that “Gaza is a method.” In the introduction to the Palestine Laboratory book, Loewenstein shares a 2022 statement by neocon Elliott Abrams that basically signals this very sentiment: “The role of Israel is to serve as a model.” And in his book’s conclusion, Loewenstein observes that “The Israeli defense industry is banking on its prowess to continue impressing global clients.” In fact, in the second episode of The Palestine Laboratory, Loewenstein shows that other countries, purchasers of Israel’s military-surveillance products, are already using the technology to “subjugate and surveil” their own populations.
Considering Loewenstein’s evidence—and the Israeli defense industry’s close ties with corporations like Palantir and Google—there is an action takeaway. As Catherine reminds us, we have the power to “stop financing our enemy”—and we ignore that power at our own peril.
